One of the most popular beach activities each year is the Sandy Point Sandcastle Competition.
The event is generally held twice every year, once during Easter school holidays and once during the Christmas school holidays, over 200 people, mostly family groups, children and youths participate in this friendly, happy competition. The competition is held on the main beach near the surf lifesaving club. Prizes are awarded for the best sandcastles.
A Sausage Sizzle is also be held at the start of the beach track for hungry sandcastle builders after the event.
Entry fees are only $1 per person. Prizes are sponsored by the Sandy Point Community Group (SPCG) and by local businesses.
Event held 29 Dec 2018: Sandy Point Sandfly a winner!
The weather was kind enough to stop raining but it wasn't too hot for shoveling sand, so we had another huge turnout for the Sandy Point Sandcastle competition. About 180 competitors ranging in age from 5 year olds working on their own to family groups of 5 or 6 adults and children built an amazing range of sand sculptures and sandcastles.
Here's a few photos of the event and many of the prize winning entries, which included everyone's favourite pest at the moment, the Sandy Point Sandfly!
The Sausage Sizzle afterwards was a big success, especially as the cafe is still not open for business.
Thanks for all who participated in this great event and helped us raise money to pay for the external defibrillator cabinet. Thanks also to Sue and Andy at the General Store for their very generous prize.
