Little Egret
COMMON NAME: Little Egret
CATEGORIES: Inlet
These small white herons have a long black bill and black legs.
They can be seen along the edge of the water at the inlet and out on the tidal mudflats.
They are usually solitary but can be observed in pairs during breeding season.
They are the only egrets that chase prey by lifting their wings to startle it before running it down.
They eat invertebrates and fish.
During breeding season, adults display long wispy nuptial plumes.
