Election message from Sandy Point Community Power Inc.
The Sandy Point Community Power committee recognise that the candidate that wins your vote in the upcoming Federal election is a personal and private decision.
We would however appeal to you to consider the future of our energy system when making this decision. That the Monash electorate is likely to be a much closer contest than previously heightens the importance of each of our votes.
Sandy Point Community Power supports parties and candidates with policies that transition our energy system to a renewable basis as soon as possible. Any alternate will increase the extent of permanent climate change, with potentially devastating impact on agriculture, our health, coastal erosion, tourism, and food and insurance costs.
We do not support parties or candidates who propose nuclear energy as part of the ‘solution’. Reports from recognised experts such as the CSRIO point out that modular nuclear reactors are, as yet, unproven technology, will not be available for decades therefore requiring prolonged burning of fossil fuels, likely to cost multiple times current estimates, use enormous amounts of precious water, and produce electricity at highest cost per kWhr. And then there is the threat of radiation emergencies, decommissioning challenges at the end of their operating life, and the need to safely manage radioactive waste for thousands of years!
We advocate for renewables.
