Field Guides to local Birds, Plants, Fungi

Our Field Guides to Local Birds, Plants and Fungi are brought to you by the Sandy Point Community Group as part of our Sandy Point Community Plan aim to protect our unique natural environment.

Local volunteers have supplied content, and all photographs have been taken in and around Sandy Point and Shallow Inlet. Every effort is made to accurately identify our local birds, plants and fungi, and to provide links to species information at online authorities such as Atlas of Living Australia, Birdlife Australia, and iNaturalist.

These guides are already quite comprehensive, and will continue to grow as more species are added, and more photographs for existing entries are added.

If you would like to contribute to any of these guides, we would love to showcase your best photographs. In order to maintain the quality and accuracy of the field guides, we will have a selection process for inclusion of submitted photos.

Photos may be added if they meet the following criteria …

  • the ID of the bird, plant or fungi is verified

  • the photo quality is acceptable - high resolution, not cropped or compressed

  • the photo is taken at Sandy Point, Shallow Inlet or surrounds

  • the photo illustrates a species or an aspect of a species which is not already well depicted.

You can access the field guides on your phone, tablet or desktop at

Enjoy identifying, learning and impressing your visitors with your knowledge of our wonderful flora and fauna.
