Walkable Town

Koala walking on the road in Sandy Point

Community Plan Key Theme: Safe Walkways and Roads

Sandy Point walkable town. Peter Slifirski (SPCG) speaks with Mim Hook on ABC Gippsland, 5 February 2026

The SPCG seeks to:

  • Promote Sandy Point as a “walkable town”

  • Introduce traffic calming measures

  • Create safer recreational pathways such as the Sandy Point Road Safe Path and Waratah Way

  • Reduce light pollution and propose viable alternatives

  • Recognise and preserve existing pathways, such as the Henderson Track

  • Support controlled roadside vegetation management

Considerations and actions:

  • Sandy Point has some unique holiday road issues. Our visiting car population peaks at the same time as pedestrian traffic increases..

  • SPCG continued to encourage South Gippsland Council and Councillors to design and maintain our streets for all users not just cars.

  • In response to our lobbying, strategic vegetation trimming around traffic signage took place before the busy summer period. A more significant review and trimming was planned by Council after the summer season, with works to be budget dependant.

  • We continue to seek a reduction in speed limits around Sandy Point. This includes reducing the 80km/h speed limit on Sandy Point Road.  Council do not currently support this but have advised they will investigate options for longer term traffic management controls.

  • We continue to request upgraded and additional speed limit and walkable town signage within the township.

  • Successful lobbying by SPCG resulted in the installation of mobile electronic signage on Telopea Drive over the holiday periods. The sign reminds drivers of the 40km/h speed limit in Sandy Point.

  • Flashing signage has been shown to have a significant behavioural impact especially around speed transition zones (i.e. from 100 km/h to 80 km/h to 40 km/h).

  • We gained the support of Danny O’Brien’s office in seeking funding from Danny Pearson, Minister for Road Safety/TAC in the acquisition of a permanent trailer/electronic sign and further road calming measures.

  • Traffic calming measures may include speed humps, raised crosswalks and raised intersections, mini roundabouts, chicanes.
