Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo

Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo at Sandy Point

COMMON NAME: Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo

CATEGORIES: Beach Bush Inlet

The largest of the different species of cockatoos seen locally, these very large black birds have yellow patches on their faces and tails.

Nomadic birds, you can see them flying between the prom and other areas of bush.

They usually travel in flocks and you can hear their distinctive wailing as they fly overhead.

They are seed eaters and you typically know they are up in a tree from the shower of cones and debris on the ground.

They also eat the larvae of wood borers by stripping bark and gouging with their bills.
