Curlew Sandpiper
COMMON NAME: Curlew Sandpiper
CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet Migratory
LOCAL NOTES:
Curlew Sandpipers usually arrive on our shores in September. At this time they have grey and white plumage, which gives them camouflage on the mudflats.
They can be seen at both Shallow Inlet and out on the spit. Sometimes they can be seen roosting in groups of several hundred, and they are often in mixed groups with other birds such as Red-necked Stints.
They usually leave our shores in April, at which time some will have transitioned into their reddish-brown breeding plumage.
