Hooded Plover

Hooded Plover on the spit at Sandy Point

COMMON NAME: Hooded Plover

CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet Beach-nesting

This iconic little bird has a distinctive black cap, red bill with a black tip and a red ring around the eye.

They are resident along the spit, where they lay their eggs in a scrape in the sand above the high tide mark.

They are extremely vulnerable to predation, disturbance by people and dogs, and severe weather events.

Despite a catastrophic decline in numbers, we are very fortunate to still have several nesting pairs on the spit.
