Red-capped Plover
COMMON NAME: Red-capped Plover
CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet Beach-nesting
These tiny resident plovers can be seen down the spit and at the inlet.
They can be difficult to spot at the inlet, as they are well camouflaged on the mudflats. They are more obvious on the spit, where their chestnut cap catches your eye as the wee bird darts across the sand.
They are often seen in the company of other plovers.
Red-capped Plovers are colonial nesters, laying eggs and sitting on their nests in the dunes in close proximity to each other.
