Australian Shelduck

Australian Shelducks on the spit at Sandy Point

COMMON NAME: Australian Shelduck

CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet

These attractive large ducks have a preference for freshwater, and thus are only occasional visitors to Sandy Point.

They have been spotted resting on the spit, probably stopping by briefly as they head elsewhere.

They are usually in pairs or groups.

They have chestnut, black and green feathers, with a distinctive narrow white band around the neck. The female also has white rings around her eyes and the base of the bill.
