Vegetation Management Plan
Future-proof Biodiversity and Habitat:
Waratah Bay - Shallow Inlet Coastal Reserve
Development of a Vegetation Management Plan for the reserve, comprising flora lists, weed population data, GIS layers including vegetation conditions, priority areas and monitoring locations. This project will deliver an ongoing legacy providing flora identification and management strategies specific to the location.
Project Stages:
1. Preliminary work consisting of inception meeting with WiSP Habitat members, field maps, communication with Sandy Point Waratah Bay Foreshore Committee of Management.
2. Field surveys by Botanist assigning Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVC’s) to remnant vegetation and assigning condition as high, medium or low.
3. GIS mapping with layers.
4. Reporting/Preparation of Management Plan describing; vegetation values, quality, threats, weeds and baseline data
5. Outcome - A Vegetation Management Plan that includes flora, weed population data, GIS layers including vegetation conditions, priority areas and monitoring locations.
Projected Outcomes:
What are the project’s expected future outcomes?
Short-term:
• Identification of rare and endangered flora and threats
• Gathering of current data and mapping
• Informs intervention to make the ecosystem more resilient to changes in climate
Medium-term:
• Effective coordinated land management to address threats, utilising volunteers and contractors
• Identification of best management strategies for specific locations
• Increased capacity building of volunteer group
• Early involvement of stakeholders to increase engagement and sustain support
• The Vegetation Management Plan to sit within Sandy Point Waratah Bay Foreshore Management Plan
Long-term:
• Conservation and protection of biodiversity and habitat
• Restoring ecosystems
• Environmental sustainability for future generations
