Crested Tern
COMMON NAME: Crested Tern
A large tern, these birds can be seen in Sandy Point throughout the year.
Crested Terns can be observed sitting along the water’s edge, sometimes in groups of up to 1000 birds.
They have a preference for the area around the entrance of Shallow Inlet, and can often be seen hunting there in small groups, diving into the water to grab unsuspecting fish. They have a tendency to try and steal fish off each other, which can be quite entertaining to view.
Young Terns harass their parents for food by making long squawks and getting in their face.
