Double-banded Plover
COMMON NAME: Double-banded Plover
CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet Migratory
These small migratory birds arrive on our shores in February.
They have muted colours and blend in well while feeding on the beach or on the mudflats at the inlet.
They can be observed in large groups, often with other small birds, sheltering in the foredunes on the spit.
In July, they come into vibrant double banded plumage before they set off on their return journey to New Zealand where they breed.
