Eastern Curlew
COMMON NAME: Eastern Curlew
CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet Migratory
Eastern Curlews are large waders with a distinctive long de-curved bill.
They feed on the mudflats at Shallow Inlet and can be observed resting in a group by the water’s edge on the spit.
They are designated as Critically Endangered as their numbers are plummeting. This has been witnessed locally: 85 Eastern Curlews spent the summer of 2023 around Sandy Point, while records from 1983 documented 622.
