Sanderling
COMMON NAME: Sanderling
CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet Migratory
These migratory waders are mainly seen on the spit, chasing the waves of the falling tide, where they feed on small crustaceans and molluscs.
They can also be spotted moseying around in the wrack, picking off sand hoppers.
A small grey and white bird, they are difficult to distinguish from the even smaller Red-necked Stint.
They are often seen in mixed groups with other migratory birds. At times, there are several hundred Sanderlings spread along the spit feeding at the water’s edge.
